Psychophysics of the probability weighting function

چکیده
A probability weighting function w(p) for an objective probability p in decision under risk plays a pivotal role in Kahneman-Tversky’s prospect theory. Although recent studies in econophysics and neuroeconomics widely utilized probability weighting functions, psychophysical foundations of the probability weighting functions have been unknown. Notably, a behavioral economist Prelec (1998) axiomatically derived the probability weighting function: w(p)=exp(−(−ln p)) (0<α<1; w(0)=1, w(1/e)=1/e, w(1)=1), which has extensively been studied in behavioral neuroeconomics. The present study utilizes psychophysical theory to derive Prelec’s probability weighting function from psychophysical laws of perceived waiting time in probabilistic choices. Also, the relations between the parameters in the probability weighting function and the probability discounting function in behavioral psychology were derived. Future directions in the application of the psychophysical theory of probability weighting function in econophysics and neuroeconomics are discussed.

Money, kisses, and electric shocks: on the affective psychology of risk.
Prospect theory's S-shaped weighting function is often said to reflect the psychophysics of chance. We propose an affective rather than psychophysical deconstruction of the weighting function resting on two assumptions. First, preferences depend on the affective reactions associated with potential outcomes of a risky choice. Second, even with monetary values controlled, some outcomes are relati...
متن کاملTime discounting: psychophysics of intertemporal and probabilistic choices
Intertemporal and probabilistic choices have been attracting attention in behavioral neuroeconomics. Although recent advances in neuroeconomics demonstrated neural processes underlying intertemporal and probabilistic choices, the roles of psychophysical effects on the choices have largely been understudied. In this paper, we review the roles of psychophysical effects in time and risk attitudes....
متن کاملRunning head: FORM AND CONTENT IN RISKY CHOICE 1 When Payoffs Look Like Probabilities: Separating Form and Content in Risky Choice
Paralleling research in perception, behavioral models of risky choice posit “psychophysical” transformations of material outcomes and probabilities. Prospect theory assumes a value function that is concave for gains and convex for losses, and an inverse S-shaped probability weighting function. But in typical experiments, form and content are confounded: Probabilities are represented on a bounde...
متن کاملSuboptimal decision criteria are predicted by subjectively weighted probabilities and rewards.
Subjects performed a visual detection task in which the probability of target occurrence at each of the two possible locations, and the rewards for correct responses for each, were varied across conditions. To maximize monetary gain, observers should bias their responses, choosing one location more often than the other in line with the varied probabilities and rewards. Typically, and in our tas...
متن کاملA Glance at Psychophysics Software Programs
Visual stimulation with precise control of stimulus has transformed the field of psychophysics since the introduction of personal computers. Luminance and chromatic features of stimulus, timing, and position of the stimulus are the main features that could be defined using programs written specifically for psychophysical experiments. In this manuscript, software used for the psychophysical expe...
